Both are EU-built machine translation companies, but they grew up in different worlds. The trade-off, which DeepL is upfront about, is breadth: it supports far fewer languages than Google Translate's 130+, and many Asian and African languages are missing or thin.

Systran reaches 55+ languages with more than 150 direct language pair combinations. Alongside the major European languages it covers Arabic, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Japanese, Korean, Hindi, and others, with deep history in European pairs from its years serving EU institutions. Here Systran owns a capability DeepL simply does not offer. Systran Server runs the entire neural engine inside the customer's own infrastructure. Documents never leave the network, there is no cloud round-trip, and nothing is retained on Systran's servers. For defence contractors, intelligence agencies, law firms, and regulated financial institutions, that is often the difference between a tool compliance will approve and one it rejects outright. Its free tier is unusually generous, and the API Free plan adds 500,000 characters/month, with API Pro at EUR 20 per million characters. Systran's cloud tiers start lower — Lite at EUR 6.99/month, Plus at EUR 19.99/month (adds API access), and Premium at EUR 44.99/month (custom model training, translation memory). Both are credible on GDPR, and both keep cloud data in the EU. DeepL, a German SE, scores 9.0 for EU compliance: Finland-hosted processing, ISO 27001, immediate deletion and no model training on Pro plans. For a cloud service, that is about as reassuring as it gets — though free-tier translations may be used anonymously to improve the models.

Systran edges ahead at 9.5, and the reasons are structural. When to Choose DeepL

Choose DeepL if translation quality and a clean experience are what you are after. For multilingual European teams handling emails, documents, and product localisation, its output is measurably better than the alternatives on European language pairs, and the web app, browser extensions, and desktop apps make it pleasant to live in day to day.

It is also the better developer choice for most projects. The API is well-designed, the free tier covers development and light production, and DeepL Write adds grammar and style correction on top of translation. If your content fits DeepL's supported languages and you do not have an on-premise mandate, this is the default.

When to Choose Systran

Choose Systran when where your data lives is non-negotiable. Government agencies, defence contractors, and regulated enterprises that cannot send documents to any external cloud get production-grade on-premise deployment that no comparable provider offers. That alone can make Systran the only viable option.

It is also the stronger fit for specialised, high-volume translation. Systran is not the runner-up so much as the specialist. When you need on-premise deployment, custom domain models, the strictest data-sovereignty guarantees, or the ability to bid on classified government work, Systran sits in a category largely by itself among commercial MT platforms — and the ChapsVision backing only sharpens that positioning. Its consumer interface feels dated next to DeepL's, and its value is weaker for small teams, but those are the right trade-offs for the institutional buyers it serves.
