Our Methodology

How we find, verify, and evaluate European software.

EU Verification Process

Every product listed on EuropeanStack must pass our European verification process before it appears in the directory. This is not a self-reported badge — we independently verify each company.

Our verification covers:

  • Headquarters location. We confirm the company is headquartered in an EU member state, EEA country, or broader European nation using official company registries, legal filings, and public records.
  • EU tier classification. Each product is assigned one of three tiers:
    • EU Member — headquartered in an EU member state (e.g., Germany, France, Netherlands)
    • EEA — headquartered in an EEA country outside the EU (e.g., Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein)
    • European — headquartered in a European country outside the EEA (e.g., Switzerland, United Kingdom)
  • Ownership transparency. If a European company is a subsidiary of a non-European parent, we disclose this clearly. These products still appear in the directory — with an ownership transparency badge — because the European entity, team, and data processing remain European.

Rating System

Products that receive a deep review are rated on a 10-point scale across six dimensions. Each dimension is scored independently to give readers a nuanced picture rather than a single misleading number.

Ease of Use

How intuitive is the product? Can a new user get started without extensive training? We assess onboarding, UI clarity, and documentation quality.

Feature Depth

Does the product cover the core use cases in its category? We evaluate feature completeness, advanced capabilities, and how it compares to market leaders.

Value for Money

Is the pricing fair for what you get? We consider free tiers, per-seat costs, enterprise pricing, and how the product compares to alternatives at similar price points.

EU Compliance

How well does the product handle GDPR, data residency, and European regulatory requirements? We look at DPA availability, sub-processor lists, data hosting locations, and privacy controls.

Support Quality

What is the support experience? We evaluate response times, support channels, documentation, community resources, and whether support is available in European time zones.

Integration Ecosystem

How well does the product connect with other tools? We assess API quality, native integrations, webhook support, and compatibility with common European and global software stacks.

The overall rating is an average of these six scores, weighted equally. We do not inflate ratings — a score of 7/10 means a genuinely good product, not an average one.

Two-Tier Content Model

EuropeanStack provides two levels of coverage:

  • Directory listings. Every product receives a verified listing with headquarters confirmation, category placement, a concise description, and at least one honest pro and one honest con. Listings are our way of ensuring broad coverage — every European product that meets our criteria gets represented.
  • Deep reviews. Select products receive full editorial reviews. These include hands-on testing, detailed ratings across all six dimensions, pricing analysis, feature breakdowns, comparison positioning, and a comprehensive pros/cons assessment. Deep reviews are our editorial investment in the products we believe matter most to our readers.

Research Process

Our research process for each product includes:

  1. Verification. Confirm European headquarters and classify the EU tier.
  2. Product analysis. Review the product website, documentation, and publicly available information. For deep reviews, we test the product directly.
  3. Pricing review. Document current pricing tiers, free plans, and enterprise options. We note pricing currency and any EU-specific pricing.
  4. Compliance check. Assess GDPR readiness, data hosting locations, DPA availability, and sub-processor transparency.
  5. Competitive positioning. Place the product within its category and identify relevant alternatives — both European and non-European.
  6. Editorial review. Write honest pros and cons. Every product gets at least one genuine strength and one genuine limitation.

Editorial Independence

Our editorial process is independent of our affiliate relationships. Products with affiliate links receive the same honest evaluation as those without. We never accept payment for favourable coverage or inflated ratings.

If we find a product that does not meet our standards, we say so. If a European alternative genuinely falls short of a non-European competitor in specific areas, we note that too. Our readers rely on us for honest assessments, and we take that responsibility seriously.
