Madrid-built AI site search and product discovery plug-in for online stores, priced by request volume
Review by EuropeanStack EditorialUpdated Verified
Doofinder scores 7.7 out of 10 for doing one job well: giving non-technical merchants a credible search upgrade in a day, from a Spanish company with a clear GDPR paper trail. Ease of use and platform coverage are its strongest points. Weaker points include metered pricing that can jump with traffic and premium features reserved for the EUR 349 tier. Recent one-star Shopify reviews also report search outages and slow support, which buyers should weigh against the high average rating. For a growing shop on a mainstream platform, it is a sensible choice. A team that wants control, or a retailer with an enterprise catalogue, fits the alternatives above better.

Doofinder is a Madrid-based site search service that adds AI-powered search, recommendations and a conversational assistant to online stores through ready-made plug-ins. Picture a merchant selling garden furniture on WooCommerce. Her shop has 3,000 products, a built-in search box that only matches exact titles, and a growing pile of customer emails asking why "parasol" returns nothing. She is not a developer and has no budget for one.
That merchant is the customer Doofinder was built for. She installs a connector, lets it import her catalogue, picks a plan and gets a search layer that tolerates typos and shows results as shoppers type. The whole job takes an afternoon rather than a project plan.
Behind the product stands Doofinder, S.L., registered in Madrid at C/ Cronos 63 (Registro Mercantil de Madrid) and incorporated in June 2010 according to the Spanish company database infonif. Its German imprint also lists a development office in Bielefeld. The Spanish business magazine Emprendedores reported in March 2024 that the company is bootstrapped, owned by its founders, with revenue of about EUR 16 million and more than 200 staff. Doofinder's own About page cites roughly 200 employees, 10,000 customers, 52 countries and 45 million searches a day. Treat those as vendor figures.
One clarification matters for anyone browsing the search and observability category. Doofinder is not a developer search engine like Meilisearch, Elastic or Manticore Search. Those are engines you host or configure and wire into an application. Doofinder is a finished e-commerce product with a merchant-facing control panel. It also differs from its German counterpart FactFinder, which sells to larger retailers through a sales-led process. If you want an API-first platform, the closest match is Algolia, covered in our Algolia alternatives page.
Doofinder's homepage lists Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, PrestaShop, BigCommerce and Adobe Commerce, plus more than 30 other platforms through its API. On Shopify, the app has been listed since July 2015 and carries a 4.7 out of 5 rating from 763 reviews at the time of research. The app listing is published by Doofinder, S.L. itself.
The practical benefit is speed. A connector reads your product feed, indexes it and injects the search layer into the storefront. Shops on PrestaShop or WooCommerce can follow the same routine, and agencies can repeat it across clients.
The core product is a results layer that appears as shoppers type, with typo tolerance and natural language handling. By default, results start showing after the third keystroke, which Doofinder documents on its pricing page. Merchants can steer rankings through category merchandising and searchandising rules, so a seasonal range can be pushed above older stock without editing the catalogue.
Personalisation sits higher up the ladder. One-to-one personalisation, visual search and 365-day analytics belong to the Advanced plan, while Basic and Pro get AI search, recommendations, Quiz Maker and, on Pro, multi-index search and real-time AI alerts. The Shopify listing also mentions voice and image search.
Product recommendations appear on every plan. Quiz Maker lets a shop build a guided questionnaire, such as "which running shoe suits you?", that ends in a product shortlist. For catalogues where shoppers do not know the vocabulary, this is a useful complement to the search box rather than a gimmick.
Doofinder's newest layer is a conversational assistant that answers shopper questions from the product catalogue and knowledge base. It is available on Pro, Advanced and Enterprise as an add-on with pricing on request, so budget cannot be planned from the public page. Doofinder's support FAQ states that no data is shared for model training and that it is processed in real time. Third-party model providers, it says, do not retain client data beyond what is required.
Doofinder bills in euros per month by request volume, and the pricing page lists four plans. Basic costs EUR 49 per month (EUR 44 billed annually) for up to 10,000 requests. Pro costs EUR 149 (EUR 134 annually) for 150,000. Advanced costs EUR 349 (EUR 314 annually) for 400,000. Enterprise is custom. Annual billing saves 10 percent, and the page promises no minimum commitment on monthly billing.
The metering deserves attention. Doofinder states that a request is counted each time its server responds to an action. Search queries count, and so does indexing: an export of 1,000 items generates 10 requests. Limits apply per product per month, so a shop that runs search and recommendations may consume two separate allowances.
This is where the complaints cluster. On the Shopify App Store, the four newest reviews at the time of research, dated February to September 2026, all give one star. One merchant says search "stopped working without notice" more than once. Another, paying USD 61 a month, says the app treated the store as free-plan and cut search off at its quota. A third reports a legacy price raised from EUR 25 to EUR 149 a month without consultation, and a fourth calls support responses "slow, generic, and ultimately unhelpful". Doofinder's public reply to that review acknowledges a temporary backlog that stretched response times to four days. These are individual reviews set against a high average rating, but they point at a structural trade-off. Metered pricing is predictable until traffic spikes, and the step from EUR 149 to EUR 349 is steep for a small shop.
The Shopify listing quotes the same three plans in dollars, at USD 61, 186 and 436 per month, so Shopify merchants should check which currency they are billed in. Doofinder describes its free trial as 15 days on Doofinder's support site and Shopify listing, with no card required. There is no permanent free plan, which sets Doofinder apart from developer tools such as Algolia and Meilisearch that offer free tiers.
Doofinder is subject to Spanish and EU law as a Madrid company. Its privacy policy cites the GDPR and Spain's Organic Law 3/2018, and it names a Data Protection Officer. A Data Processing Agreement published on its site casts Doofinder, S.L. as processor and the customer as controller.
The hosting picture is set out in Doofinder's AI Assistant FAQ. Per Doofinder's documentation, EU stores' data stays in its EU region on AWS (a US-owned provider), with separate USA and APAC regions and no transfer between them. This site's listing sets its "hosted in the EU" flag on that basis.
Two caveats apply. The DPA names Amazon Web Services as a sub-processor without specifying a region, and US ownership of AWS is a point some European procurement teams weigh. Buyers who need the region in a contract should ask Doofinder to confirm it in writing. We could not find an ISO 27001 or SOC 2 certification on the vendor's site.
Small and mid-sized shops on mainstream platforms. If you run Shopify, WooCommerce or PrestaShop and have no developer, Doofinder is the fastest route to better search. The Basic and Pro plans cover most catalogues under 10,000 monthly search requests.
Agencies managing many storefronts. The connectors are repeatable, the control panel is merchant-friendly, and the euro pricing keeps client quotes simple.
Spanish-speaking and southern European retailers. The company is Spanish, the website runs in English, Spanish, French, Italian, German and Dutch, and its homepage customer logos include Crocs, Freshly, Smeg and Volkswagen.
Teams who should look elsewhere. If you need a developer-first API with fine-grained control, compare Algolia and the Algolia vs Meilisearch page. If you run a large catalogue with complex B2B rules and want a sales-led engagement, FactFinder is the better fit. Shops that mainly want a storefront platform with EU roots should also look at Shopware in the e-commerce category.

For online shops, yes. Doofinder suits merchants who want a plug-in for Shopify, WooCommerce or PrestaShop with euro pricing and little coding. Algolia is a developer-first search API with deeper customisation, and its group parent is a US company.
